Photo basics
US passport photos follow a long‑standing 2×2 inch specification. Whether you capture the image at home or in a studio, these rules still apply.
- Printed size: 2×2 inch (51×51 mm).
- Digital equivalent: typically 600×600 pixels at 300 DPI.
- Recent: taken within the last 6 months.
- Background: solid white; no textures, patterns, or objects.
Head position and framing
Your head must be centered and occupy most of the frame while leaving some space above the hair.
- Head height from chin to top of hair should be between 1" and 1⅜" (50–70% of the image).
- Center the head horizontally; both ears should be visible where possible.
- Avoid wide‑angle lenses or selfies that distort facial proportions.
Expression, clothing, and accessories
The State Department wants a neutral, professional look so that facial recognition works reliably.
- Keep a neutral expression, mouth closed, eyes looking straight ahead.
- Wear everyday clothing; avoid uniforms, camouflage, or glittery outfits.
- Glasses are generally not allowed unless you have a documented medical exception.
- Religious head coverings are allowed but must not cast heavy shadows or obscure facial features.
