Digital photo requirements

The DS‑160/DS‑260 systems expect a digital image that closely matches US passport specs. Small deviations can cause upload errors.

  • Size: 600×600 pixels, JPEG format.
  • Background: white or off‑white, evenly lit.
  • Color: full color, no filters or heavy retouching.

Pose and head size

Consular officers need a straight‑on view of your face with no tilt or perspective distortion.

  • Head height 50–70% of the frame.
  • Face the camera directly; no three‑quarter or profile shots.
  • Keep the camera at eye level to avoid looking up or down.

Expression and lighting

A neutral, well‑lit expression reduces the chance of the system flagging your photo as problematic.

  • Neutral expression with mouth closed.
  • Eyes must be fully visible and not obscured by hair or glasses.
  • Use soft lighting to avoid deep shadows under the eyes or nose.
