Emirates ID Photo Requirements

The Emirates ID is issued by ICP - the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security - the same authority that issues UAE passports and visas. ICP publishes one Personal Photo Specifications document covering the photographs it accepts, and these are the requirements it sets.

  • Width: 35-40mm, portrait orientation.
  • Head size: your face must take up 70-80% of the photograph.
  • Background: plain light-coloured, evenly lit, with no shadows behind the head.
  • Age: no more than 6 months old.
  • Expression: neutral, mouth closed, both eyes open and clearly visible.
  • Glasses: allowed if there is no flash reflection and no tinted lenses. Avoid heavy frames.
  • Head coverings: not permitted except for religious reasons, and your face must stay clearly visible from the bottom of the chin to the top of the forehead.

Where This Specification Comes From

We want to be straight with you about provenance, because it affects how much weight to put on this page. ICP does not publish a photo requirement sheet specific to the identity card. What it publishes is a single Personal Photo Specifications document that governs the photographs it accepts across its services, and that is the source of every requirement listed above.

So this profile is built on the issuing authority's own published standard, but it is not confirmed against an Emirates-ID-specific document, and we mark it as pending official review rather than claim more than we know. The measurements it checks - head height, crop, background uniformity, sharpness - are the same ones ICP names.

Emirates ID vs UAE Visa Photos

Both come from ICP and both require the face to occupy 70-80% of the frame, which is noticeably tighter than the 60-70% most Western passport specs use. That single difference is the most common reason a photo that passed elsewhere fails here: the head is simply too small in the frame.

Across the UAE visa photos we have checked, crop was the single largest cause of rejection - more than background, lighting and resolution combined.
