Official Ireland Visa Photo Requirements

Irish visa photo rules are published by Immigration Service Delivery (ISD), part of the Department of Justice, Home Affairs and Migration. They are stricter about size range than most visa specs and, unlike the Irish passport, they are a print specification - you post two identical photographs with the paper application rather than uploading one.

  • Quantity: two identical photographs with every application.
  • Size: 45-50mm in height and 35-38mm in width. A standard 35x45mm print sits at the minimum of both ranges.
  • Head size: your face must take up 70% to 80% of the photo.
  • Background: plain white or light grey, with good contrast against your face and no shadows or glare.
  • Age: less than 6 months old, and both photos must show exactly the same image.
  • Paper: printed on photographic paper, with a white unglazed reverse.

Ireland Visa vs Ireland Passport Photos

These are two different specifications and mixing them up is a common cause of delay. The Irish passport spec (Department of Foreign Affairs) is a digital portal upload - 715x951 pixels, JPEG up to 9MB - and it bans glasses outright. The visa spec is a printed photograph and does not ban glasses, but requires your eyes to be clearly visible with no tinted lenses.

  • Visa: two prints, 35-38mm x 45-50mm, submitted by post.
  • Passport: one digital image, 715x951px, submitted online.
  • Visa: glasses allowed if eyes are clearly visible.
  • Passport: no glasses at all since 2018.

Before You Post the Application

ISD asks you to write the applicant name and the visa application or transaction number on the back of each photo in BLOCK CAPITALS, and to put the photos loose in the same envelope as the form. Do not staple or clip them to the application.

VisaPhotoCheck measures your photo against the 70-80% face-height requirement and the size range above, and shows you the result before you pay. If the crop is wrong you will see exactly how far off it is.
