Official Switzerland Visa Photo Requirements

Switzerland follows the EU Schengen visa photo standard even though it is not an EU member. Photos submitted to Swiss embassies and consulates must meet the Schengen biometric specification.

  • Size: 35×45mm (413×531px at 300 DPI).
  • Background: plain white or very light grey.
  • Head height: 70–80% of total image height (crown to chin).
  • Expression: neutral, mouth closed, eyes open and clearly visible.
  • No glasses, no tinted lenses.
  • Photo taken within the past six months.

Switzerland vs Other Schengen Countries

The head-size requirement for Switzerland is slightly tighter than general ICAO (70–80% vs 55–80%). Photos that pass for a UK or Irish passport may still be rejected for a Swiss visa application if the head is positioned too low in the frame.

  • Head must be higher in the frame than most ICAO passports require.
  • The top of the head should leave only a small margin above the crown.
  • White background is mandatory — cream or yellow tones are rejected.
