Official Ireland Passport Photo Requirements

The Irish Naturalisation and Immigration Service (INIS) follows ICAO biometric guidelines. Your photo must be a recent colour image taken within the past six months on a plain white or off-white background.

  • Size: 35×45mm (413×531px at 300 DPI).
  • Background: plain white or very light grey — no patterns or gradients.
  • Head height: 60–80% of the total image height (crown to chin).
  • Expression: neutral, mouth closed, eyes open and clearly visible.
  • Glasses: not permitted in new Irish passport applications.
  • File format: JPEG, under 240 KB.

Common Ireland Passport Photo Rejections

The Irish Passport Online portal and DFA offices reject photos for predictable reasons.

  • Background is cream, beige, or has shadows — it must be pure white.
  • Head tilted or turned more than a few degrees.
  • Glasses present (banned since 2018).
  • Eyes partially closed or gaze not directed straight at the camera.
  • Heavy editing, filters, or Instagram-style colour grading.

How VisaPhotoCheck Fixes It

Upload any clear photo of your face. VisaPhotoCheck removes the background, scales your head to the 60–80% target range, and exports a 413×531px JPEG ready for the Passport Online portal or a post office counter submission.
