Official Ireland Passport Photo Requirements

Irish passports are issued by the Passport Service of the Department of Foreign Affairs, which follows ICAO biometric guidelines. Your photo must be a recent colour image taken within the past six months on a plain light grey, white or cream background.

• Digital size: at least 715×951 pixels.
• Background: plain light grey, white or cream — no patterns or gradients.
• Face: 70–80% of the total image height (crown to chin).
• Expression: neutral, mouth closed, eyes open and clearly visible.
• Glasses: not permitted in new Irish passport applications.
• File format: JPEG, up to 9MB.

Common Ireland Passport Photo Rejections

The Irish Passport Online portal and DFA offices reject photos for predictable reasons.

• Background is patterned, dark, or has shadows — it must be plain and light.
• Head tilted or turned more than a few degrees.
• Glasses present (banned since 2018).
• Eyes partially closed or gaze not directed straight at the camera.
• Heavy editing, filters, or Instagram-style colour grading.

Why We Do Not Make This Photo

The Passport Service says photos must not be digitally altered or edited in any way, and that digital enhancements or changes are not acceptable. Replacing the background is how an online photo maker works, so we do not offer one for Irish passports. For an online application you can have someone take the photo at home, or use a participating Photo Code provider.
