Italian National ID Photo Requirements (Carta d'Identità, 35×45mm)
Italian Carta d'Identità Elettronica (CIE) photo requirements: 35mm wide and at least 45mm high, face 70–80% of the photo. The Ministry of the Interior does not accept retouched photos, so we explain the rules and do not make this photo.

The Italian Carta d'Identità Elettronica (CIE) is issued by the municipality (Comune) and uses the same biometric photo standard as the Italian passport.
- Size: 35×45mm (413×531px at 300 DPI).
- Background: plain white or very light grey.
- Head height: the face takes up 70–80% of the photo height.
- Expression: neutral, mouth closed.
- No glasses, no tinted lenses.
- Photo taken within the past six months.
Applying for Your CIE
CIE applications are submitted at the Comune (municipal office) with an appointment booked through the government portal. One printed 35×45mm photo is required at the counter, or a digital JPEG for online applications.
- Book an appointment via the Agenda CIE portal.
- Bring one printed 35×45mm compliant photo.
- Italian consulates abroad follow the same specification.
Why We Do Not Make This Photo
The Ministry of the Interior's CIE photo page says the photo must not be cropped to exclude the background or to straighten the head, and must not be retouched, coloured or tampered with. Replacing the background is how an online photo maker works, so we do not offer one for the Italian ID card.
- A digital photo on a USB stick is accepted: JPG, at least 400 dpi, 500kb at most.
