NZeTA Photo Requirements

The New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) is required for visa-waiver nationals travelling to New Zealand. The photo is submitted through the Immigration New Zealand app or website.

  • Online format: portrait JPEG at a 3:4 aspect ratio.
  • File size: between 512KB and 3.14MB for the online application.
  • Background: plain and light with even illumination.
  • Face height: 70–80% of the total image.
  • Expression: neutral, mouth closed, eyes open and looking straight ahead.
  • Clear prescription glasses may be accepted if untinted and free of glare.
  • Photo must be in focus with even lighting — no shadows on the face.

Applying for the NZeTA

The NZeTA is available to citizens of the visa-waiver countries — including the US, UK, EU, and many others. It is valid for two years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first.

  • Apply via the Immigration New Zealand website or mobile app.
  • Upload the original JPEG during the online form.
  • Do not use AI enhancement, filters, background replacement, or a digitally assembled background.
  • Processing is usually instant to a few hours.
  • The NZeTA also covers the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL).
