Passport Seva publishes its own photograph guidelines for passport applications. These are the points it lists.
- Upload size: 630×810 pixels, in colour. A printed photo is 35mm wide × 45mm high.
- Background: White.
- Framing: Close-up of the head and top of the shoulders, with the face taking up 80–85% of the photograph.
- The full head must show, from the top of the hair to the bottom of the chin, centred and not tilted.
- Natural expression, eyes open and clearly visible, mouth closed, no hair across the eyes.
- Glasses: Take them off to avoid reflections.
- Head coverings only for religious reasons, with the face visible from chin to forehead and on both sides.
- No shadows on the face or background, and no red eye.
Why We Do Not Make This Photo
Passport Seva's guidelines say photos should be unaltered by computer software. Replacing the background is how an online photo maker works, so we do not offer one for the Indian passport.
- Take the photo against a real white background, from about 1.5 metres.
- For an Indian visa or OCI card the rules are different; those use a 2×2 inch photo.
