Japan Residence Card (Zairyu Card) Photo Requirements

The Japan Residence Card (在留カード, Zairyu Card) is issued by the Immigration Services Agency to mid- to long-term foreign residents. The same photo specification applies to the applications it handles, including extension of stay, change of status and permanent residence.

• Size: 30mm wide × 40mm high (354×472px at 300 DPI). This is smaller than the 35×45mm passport format.
• Face: about 25mm from the top of the head, including hair, to the chin (22–28mm).
• Only the applicant in the picture, facing forward, without a hat.
• No background and no shadows.
• Sharp and clear.
• Taken within 6 months before the application.
• Write your name on the back of a printed photo.

What Gets a Residence Card Photo Sent Back

The Agency publishes examples of unsuitable photos. If the photo does not meet the specification, you are asked to retake it.

• The wrong size, most often a 35×45mm passport photo.
• Face off-centre or turned to the side.
• A shadow in the background or on the face.
• A dark background that makes the outline hard to see.
• Edited images: enlarged eyes, whitened skin, removed moles or wrinkles, or a mirrored photo.
