UK BRP Photo Requirements (Biometric Residence Permit)

Physical UK Biometric Residence Permits expired on 31 December 2024 and were replaced by the Home Office eVisa system. This page is retained only to explain legacy photo specifications and should not be used to purchase or prepare a new BRP photo.

  • Print size: 35×45mm (413×531px at 300 DPI).
  • Background: plain white — BRP differs from the UK passport here, which uses light grey.
  • Head height: 29–34mm chin to crown (64–76% of image height).
  • Expression: neutral, mouth closed, eyes open looking at the camera.
  • No glasses, no head coverings unless worn daily for religious reasons.
  • Photo must be in sharp focus and taken within the last month.

BRP Replacement and BRP Issuance Use the Same Photo Standard

Whether you are receiving a first BRP after a visa decision, replacing a lost or stolen BRP, or extending leave to remain, the photo standard is the same biometric specification. The card itself is printed with the photo captured at the biometric appointment, so quality matters.

  • First BRP after entry visa — captured at UKVCAS during application.
  • BRP replacement (lost, stolen, damaged) — photo captured at a post office.
  • BRP extension — captured at the biometric appointment for the new application.

Top BRP Photo Rejection Reasons

These are the most common reasons BRP photo capture fails at the appointment.

  • Off-white or coloured background — must be plain white.
  • Glasses or reflective lenses.
  • Head tilted, turned, or chin too high/low.
  • Smiling or visible teeth — neutral expression only.
  • Hair covering the face or eyes.
  • Insufficient lighting causing shadows on the face.

  • Replaces the background with a compliant plain white.
  • Measures head height against the 29–34mm requirement.
  • Detects glasses, smile, head tilt, and shadows.
