The UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) launched in 2024 for nationals of non-visa countries travelling to the UK. The photo submitted through the UKVI ETA app must meet the same standard as a UK visa photo.
- Size: 35×45mm (413×531px at 300 DPI).
- Background: plain white or very light grey.
- Head height: 55–78% of the image height (crown to chin).
- Expression: neutral, mouth closed, eyes open and looking straight ahead.
- No glasses, no headwear except for verified religious reasons.
- Photo must clearly show your full face including chin and hairline.
Uploading Your ETA Photo
The UKVI ETA app accepts JPEG photos between 50 KB and 10 MB. The app includes an automated face check that rejects photos with poor lighting, occlusions, or backgrounds that are not plain white.
- Use the original camera photo — not a screenshot or forwarded copy.
- Avoid strong shadows on the face or background.
- Ensure your full chin is visible and not cut off.
- Remove hats, heavy jewellery, and headphones before taking the photo.
