The UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) launched in 2024 for nationals of non-visa countries travelling to the UK. The UK government says the photo of your face must follow its rules for digital photos of faces, the same rules used for visa applications.
- Size: at least 600 pixels wide and 750 pixels tall, vertical.
- File: JPG or JPEG, at least 50KB and no more than 6MB.
- Background: plain and light-coloured, in clear contrast to you.
- The photo must not be altered by computer software, for example by adding a filter.
- Expression: plain, mouth closed, eyes open and visible, looking straight at the camera.
- Glasses: do not wear them unless you have to. No sunglasses or tinted glasses.
- No head covering unless it is for religious or medical reasons.
- The photo must show your head, shoulders and upper body.
Uploading Your ETA Photo
The file must be a JPG or JPEG of at least 50KB and no more than 6MB. It must not be a scan or a photo of another photo, and it must not be mirrored or flipped.
- Use the original camera photo — not a screenshot or forwarded copy.
- Avoid strong shadows on the face or background.
- Ensure your full chin is visible and not cut off.
- Remove hats, heavy jewellery, and headphones before taking the photo.
